Sign-ups are under way for Keep Out the Rain KC, a no-cost program to help homeowners find and potentially fix plumbing connections that might cause basement backups and contribute to sewer overflows.

There’s a sign-up event from 4-7 p.m. this Thursday, Sept. 29, at Hillside Christian Church, 900 NE Vivion Road.

If you can’t attend, residents can contact Keep Out the Rain KC by calling 816-701-9814; sending an email to water.rain.dp3@kcmo.org, or signing up online at http://www.kcwaterservices.org/rain.

In coming weeks, a professional team also will be knocking on doors and signing up eligible residents. Team members wear royal blue polo shirts and name badges.

For homes that qualify, the no-cost plumbing connection checkup takes about 15 minutes and includes looking at plumbing connections and drains in basements and outside of the home. If the team finds a plumbing connection that should be fixed, KC Water will pay for a licensed, pre-qualified plumber to complete the repair.

Keep Out the Rain KC is part of Kansas City's Overflow Control Program, a 25-year plan to meet the requirements of the federal consent decree to improve the nation's water quality by reducing the volume and frequency of sewer overflows.
