Passing along an important message from MoDot -- |
|
|
This is an important
message from the Missouri Department of Transportation to all users of
Route 169 north of the Wheeler Downtown Airport.
MoDOT
plans major repairs on Route 169 along the Missouri River beginning in
late July through the remainder of this year. The work is both necessary
and urgent, but will create a significant, long-term traffic disruption
along an important link between Downtown Kansas City and Northland
communities. You and your stakeholders need to know what is coming.
The
problems that must be fixed begin with a deteriorating metal bin wall,
which holds up the east side of the northbound lanes along the Missouri
River levee just north of Wheeler Downtown Airport. Access to the bin
wall is difficult, and must be accomplished from the northbound and
southbound lanes. That's because Route 169 in this mile-long segment is
different than most highways. It lies only a few hundred feet from one
of the great rivers of North America. The levee keeps the river from
flooding the nearby lowlands, including the Wheeler Downtown Airport,
the railroad yards to the east, and the highway, which is built upon the
levee. That's on the west side. On the east side is a very busy
Burlington Northern-Santa Fe rail yard, with only a few feet between
highway lanes and mainline tracks.
Nearly
60 years ago, northbound Route 169 along the east bank of the Missouri
River was a city road to the Downtown Airport. However, a solid road
built on a levee made of dirt and sand presented challenges. The loose
material must be kept in place so that the pavement remains solid and
doesn't break apart.
A
"bin wall" 12 feet high in some places was built to keep the underlying
base in place and support the road. The bin wall is made up of
corrugated steel panels. MoDOT took over this road in 1994, and in the
last decade, those steel panels have rusted out enough that replacement
is now necessary. There is no quick fix.
Last
summer MoDOT and HDR, its engineering consultant, tested a method to
repair the bin walls. Subsequent review by MoDOT and HDR engineers
determined that building concrete walls would best correct the problems.
The Broadway Extension (Route 169 in this area) carries 35,000 vehicles
per day between the Northland and Downtown Kansas City. A long-term
solution requires extensive construction. Since an active railroad yard
is only a few feet away, there is no room off MoDOT's right of way to
stage construction equipment. Highway closure is the only feasible
method of making repairs.
This spring, a contract
will be awarded to: Replace deteriorated sections of the wall that
supports the northbound lanes; fix bridges that support the southbound
lanes; repair guard rail and barrier; and replace drainage between the
northbound and southbound lanes, which will resolve the highway's
problems for the long term.
The work is expected to
take up to five months, which will require closure of both the
southbound lanes and northbound lanes of Route 169. Motorists will
continue to have access to Wheeler Downtown Airport from Downtown via
the Broadway Bridge, and from Harlem Road to the east. Detours will be
to Heart of America, Fairfax and Bond bridges.
We ask you to review the attached brochure, visit the MoDOT Web page at http://www.modot.org/kansascity/major_projects/Route%20169/Route_169_Wall_Replacement.htm and
share this information with those in your group or community. Precise
details of this project will be known only after a contractor is
selected in early May. For additional clarification, you may contact me
(Steve Porter), at this e-mail address or by phone at 816-607-2152.

The below announcement is from Deb Hermann and Northland Neighborhoods, Inc:We need your help ASAP to send this
letter out to all your friends and neighbors. We need all the Northland
residents to persuade Von Maur to become the second anchor tenant at
the new Metro North Mall. We want
all your residents to read my letter below and send in their vote of
support by clicking on the link at the bottom of the letter. This link
takes them the www.VonMaurNorthlandNow
website where they can vote. We are only giving them 10 days to
respond. If it is at all possible, can you forward the letter below
today to your friends and neighbors? If we can bring Von Maur to the
Northland, it will be a very positive step for everyone!! I cannot
thank you enough for your time and effort.
Dear Friend,
As Northlanders, some of you may know
that the new managing partner of Metro North Mall is planning a complete
redevelopment of the property with Macy’s remaining as one of the
anchor department stores. One of the major components of this
redevelopment will be signing a second fashion anchor. I think Von
Maur, the fabulous family-owned up-scale retail store, would be a great
addition. The developer has approached them with the idea of being that
anchor, but they haven’t made up their mind. As Northlanders, we may
have a short window of opportunity to help persuade Von Maur to be a
part of this great project by showing our vote of support.
Let’s do this by rallying together as
concerned residents of the Northland, and let our voice be heard that we
want Von Maur here and we want access to their beautiful store. We
deserve to have more shopping options. Imagine having the second Von
Maur ever in Missouri, located in our own neighborhood. Think of all
the jobs it would create too! Wouldn’t you love to have the option to
Christmas shop at Von Maur in the future?
The last time I visited Von Maur I
really enjoyed it and found they truly fulfill their tagline of
“Shopping Perfected.” Everything from the live piano player, incredible
merchandise, free gift wrapping, free shipping and great customer
service made the experience most enjoyable. It was just a wonderful
experience and it would be even better if we didn’t have to travel as
far to visit Von Maur.
So, please join me in showing your vote
of support by clicking on the link below. Vote “Yes” that you want Von
Maur to come to the new Metro North Mall. Share any comments you might
have, especially any positive feedback regarding your Von Maur shopping
experiences. We need to hear from you by Thursday, Dec 1.
There is an easy form to fill out in the
link below without giving lots of personal details. We want to give
Von Maur an idea of how many people would shop at their store if they
opened at Metro North Mall. In addition, you can obtain more
information about Von Maur on the link below and see the impressive
renderings of what the new mall will look like.
So, come on Northlanders, please join me by voting to bring the second Von Maur in the state of Missouri to Metro North Mall!!!
Thanks so much!!!
Deb Hermann
Here is the link to vote!! Click on the
“Support Von Maur” button on the home page and it will take you to a
quick form to fill out. Please forward this email to your friends and
neighbors.

A Sherwood Estates resident reported a suspicious van sitting outside 3225 NE 47th Street.
The van was dark grey or dark military green, depending on the light,
solid color without any defining markings and looked like a 10 seater
Dodge Ram. I didn't get the license plate.
The driver and passenger were seen through the glass, and appeared to both be Caucasian males with
mid-length hair. The driver may have had curly hair, but not sure.
They saw the resident watching them for a while, and after a few
minutes, they started up the vehicle turned on College, turned on 48th
Terrace, and turned West on Chouteau Trafficway driving towards Vivian
Road.
Should you see this van, please call 9-1-1 as at a recent block meeting, Officer Markus Smith of the Shoal Creek Patrol of the Kansas City Police Department stated situations like this need to be called in.
When calling 9-1-1, do the following:
- caller provide name and phone number to 9-1-1 operator
- instruct the 9-1-1 operator that you want the responding officer to call you with the outcome of the situation
- provide specific address location & as much detail as possible
- very important to provide specific house number
- Ex: describing location as "3rd house on east of street past insection of ...." is not ideal
- remind 9-1-1 operation to have responding officer call you
- this was emphasized because sometimes the notation gets
left off or the officer doesn't follow up with the person who call 9-1-1
- get the call # assigned to your call
- let Officer Markus Smith know if you don't get called back by the responding officer
- informed that sometimes officers can forget to do this when requested
Thank you to the Sherwood resident who sent in this information. Also, we just learned today that Sherwood Bible Church had 6 air-conditioners stolen the other evening.
